MIUI 12 is now available on over 30 smartphones

Xiaomi has been updating devices to MIUI 12 for months, having started with the Mi 9 and Redmi K20 series in June. Now, Xiaomi claims that MIUI 12 is available on more than 30 smartphones, but many remain adrift on MIUI 11.

Xiaomi has been rolling out MIUI 12 for what seems like an age. Globally, the company began upgrading devices in June, starting with the Mi 9 and Redmi K20 series. Since then, the company has made steady progress with bringing other devices onto its latest OS, albeit its latest OS mostly based on Android 9.0 Pie and Android 10, rather than the newer Android 11. Xiaomi has now started upgrading its handsets to Android 11 too, although it will probably be at latest four or five months until it finishes this part of its broader MIUI 12 upgrade plan.

The company has not been updating its MIUI 12 release schedule though, leaving it somewhat unclear how many devices it has upgraded to the OS. However, that changed today, courtesy of a tweet by the official MIUI Twitter account. According to the image contained in the tweet, which we have included below, MIUI 12 is now available on 33 smartphones.

While that may sound impressive, there are some caveats. Until now, Xiaomi has counted the Mi 9T and Redmi K20 as one device, as it has with the Mi 9T Pro and Redmi K20 Pro. The pairings share the same development branches of MIUI, so an update for one is an update for both. Realistically, Xiaomi should have counted the Mi 9T, Redmi K20, Mi 9T Pro and Redmi K20 Pro as two devices, not four. Admittedly, we are picking hairs somewhat, but the company has done the same with the Pocophone F1 and Poco F1.

Today’s tweet also demonstrates that many smartphones remain on MIUI 11, despite being eligible for MIUI 12. Based on the MIUI 12 release schedule, 17 devices are awaiting MIUI 12. Oddly, some of these devices started receiving the OS months ago, including the Redmi Note 7. Hence, it is unclear what Xiaomi means by ‘MIUI 12 is available on’. Ultimately, the company still has plenty of work to do by its admission.
